It’s a little bit of a drive at around an hour away from us, but we know you will enjoy spending an afternoon here. Offering vistas of the Catskill Mountains and lakeside views, this promenade stretches 2.8 miles along the southern shore of the Ashokan Reservoir. The reservoir is one of many that were built to guarantee New York City had clean drinking water and provides 40% of the city’s water.
The promenade is paved and flat so you can walk, hike, bike or jog or even in-line skate if you’d like! There are lots of wildlife viewing opportunities so bring a camera should you catch deer grazing or a sighting of a bald eagle along the way. There are two parking areas are on either side of the walking path: one in Olivebridge, and the other in Kingston. Also, not far from the parking area, is the Ashokan Fountain. It shoots water high into the air, creating a cooling spray that’s particularly enjoyable on a hot summer day.
